When selecting your ideal wig, we first consider the wig color. But why? Knowing your hair level will help you choose the best wig possible with the most realistic finish.
So, what exactly are hair levels, and how can you find your current hair level?
That’s where we come in! Our experts at Paula Young® are here to let you in on the ABCs of
hair levels so you can find your perfect wig! That’s not all!
Paula Young® also has a large selection of wigs in various styles and hair levels that keep customers coming back for more!
What Are Hair Levels?
Hair levels or hair color levels are numbers on a color chart that determine the darkness or lightness of your hair color.
It is a universal system used to standardize hair color charts by colorists, cosmetologists, and hairstylists.
Simply put, your hair level will determine how light or dark your hair color is. Once you have this information, you can refer to your hair color by its number on the hair levels chart.
But why do we need to know about hair levels?
Knowing your natural hair color level before selecting a wig is important for achieving the desired look in your perfect hair color.
Here are the hair levels:
- Level 1 – Pure Black
- Level 2 – Medium Black or Natural Black
- Level 3 – Darkest Brown, Light or Soft Black
- Level 4 – Dark Brown
- Level 5 – Medium Brown
- Level 6 – Light Brown
- Level 7 – Dark Blonde
- Level 8 – Medium Blonde
- Level 9 – Light Blonde
- Level 10 – White Blonde or Platinum
What Are Hair Tones?
Hair tones describe the “finish” of a shade and how warm or cool that hair color shade is.
They are categorized as either warm, cool, or neutral. Warm hair tones are characterized by gold or copper highlights, whereas cool hair tones have ashy blue, green, and gray undertones.
There are five basic hair tones: red, gold, beige, ash, and neutral.
Red tones add warmth, while gold tones add a touch of luxury. Beige tones can be either warm or cool, depending on the base color.
Ash tones minimize red, gold, and brassy hues. A neutral tone has equal amounts of red, gold, and ash tones. By adding or minimizing different tones, you can create a variety of shades.
How To Find Your Current Hair Levels?
Now that you know how to identify a hair color’s level and tone by sight, it’s time to learn how to find your hair levels.
Wig hair colors sometimes look slightly different online than when they come out of the box. So, verifying the color you’re buying by its hair level, and tone will guarantee that you get exactly what you ordered.
To find your current hair level, follow this two-step process:
- Take a section of your hair farthest from your head’s crown and hold it up, separating it from the rest of your hair. This will allow you to see the section most accurately in the light, as hair strands typically look darker when layered on top of other hair.
Taking a section of hair farthest from your crown is also essential, as the lightest parts usually frame your face right along the hairline.
- Carefully compare the shade of your hair with the hair color chart. The shade most closely resembles your natural hair color is the one you want!
